Evaluating AI answers: a checklist for psychologists

Review unsupported case details, certainty, sources, alternative explanations and feasibility, with a fictional error example.

Clinical terminology does not establish reliability. Review fidelity to text, explicit uncertainty, sources and suitability for your professional context. These checks help identify errors but do not clinically validate an answer.

Find information absent from the case first

Ask which input supports each case claim. A definite family dynamic without family history adds information; an unstated intention or emotion expressed as certain is an interpretation.

Fictional error: Input says the client arrived late; output says they sabotage therapy from anger at authority. This has no established basis. Explore circumstances and meaning first; the answer is not new information.

Examine the status of information

Does it distinguish observation and hypothesis, allow other explanations and identify what is unknown? Review certainty words such as “definitely” carefully when based on limited case information.

WHO's generative AI guidance discusses misinformation and automation bias. Accepting a convincing answer without review does not remove those risks.

Check sources and suitability

Find the cited publication yourself. Does it exist, support the claim and match the context? Asking the model whether it is sure is not independent verification.

Evaluate the proposed work's rationale, your training and the client's circumstances. Do not apply a suggestion whose suitability you cannot assess. Do not rely on AI chat for risk or crisis decisions.

An example follow-up to review an answer

“List details in your answer that were absent from the case. Separate observations and hypotheses. Show the basis and missing information for each hypothesis. Provide a verifiable source title and link if using sources; state when none can be found.”

This task can narrow a SüpervizAI draft, but the second answer can also contain errors. Selecting a useful question differs from accepting a clinical conclusion. Final judgment remains with the therapist.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI answer correct if it cites sources?

Check that the source exists, was represented accurately and supports the claim. A citation does not guarantee clinical suitability.
